ABERTHAU POTTERS CLUB
In 2004, the 30th anniversary of the club, Suzanne Starr and Maria Tomsich wrote this history.
What Is a Potter? The potter is both the creator and the spectator of the magic that makes an object out of a lump of clay. The potter molds the clay with hands and mind to create a form in space. In the process, from raw clay to finished object, the shaped form is decorated with a glaze before being entrusted to the fire of the kiln. Fire is energy that performs its own creative magic. From the kiln come stone-like objects, capable of enduring from seconds to thousands of years. The opening of the kiln is a special time for the potter, the moment of disappointment or elation, depending upon whether the finished pot is what one had anticipated. Aberthau Potters continue this process with origins in ancient civilizations to work with the elemental forces of earth, fire, air and water to create ceramic objects. Our passion for clay explores the fusion between craft and art in the effort to find our individual style and experience the pleasure of creating. The History of Aberthau Potters
